What Is Life Coaching?
Anytime you do something new – or something familiar with someone new – it’s helpful to understand what you’re getting into.
You want to know what it is, especially when it involves working with another person whose ideas greatly affect the outcome.
You want to know how it works – what you get and what results you’re likely to achieve for your investment.
And you’ll want to know if it can solve the difficult problems standing in your way.
So, here is my take on coaching – otherwise known and life coaching or personal coaching.
What is life coaching?
It’s one person talking to another. That’s the bottom line. There’s nothing complicated about it. You get on the phone and have a conversation.
This conversation you’ll be having is a purposeful conversation. Both parties hold the intention of getting you past obstacles and into the life you are meant to be living. An effective conversation is a perfect place to make this kind of thing happen.
In fact, solving problems and moving forward with your life cannot take place without effective conversations, right?
Let’s say your computer software is not cooperating and you call tech support. You and the tech engage in a purposeful conversation in which you learn specifically what to do to solve the issue and move on with your work. Done. That’s an effective conversation.
Life coaching is a kind of tech support for your life. Coaches will address questions about why your life – or a particular aspect of your life – isn’t working according to your expectations.
Why do I argue all the time with my partner?
Why do I lack motivation?
What is my purpose in life?
Why do I always sabotage my plans?
Why can’t I just get it together?
I need to lose weight. Help!
How do I stop criticizing myself all the time?
How can I become more comfortable with success?
This is where a good life coach comes in handy.
Some life coaches don’t like to answer these questions for you. They’d rather ask you questions in return and help you figure it out for yourself.
Other life coaches will tell you why things go wrong, according to their models of coaching. If you agree, solutions become apparent.
I like to practice a mix of the above, depending on your circumstance. Most of my clients come to me after reading my book, which offers an explanation for why nearly everything went wrong and how to fix it.
You can get that book, Your Achilles Eel: Discover and Resolve the Hidden Cause of Negative Emotions, Bad Decisions and Self-Sabotage by entering your email address at the bottom of this page. You’ll get the PDF version immediately.
So, what is life coaching? It’s like tech support for your life.
It’s a purposeful conversation designed to help you solve problems and move your life in the direction it’s supposed to go. The process of coaching takes longer than a tech support call (but at least you don’t have to sit on hold for an hour at a time). The effect, when it works well, is the same. What was once standing in your way is no longer a problem. You’re free.
You really can learn to make your life work the way you want.
